Google Business Profile for Healthcare Clinics: The Complete Optimization Guide

Google Business Profile for doctors is a free listing that controls how your clinic appears in Google Maps and local search results. When a patient searches "psychiatrist near me" or "TMS therapy in [city]," the first thing they see is a map with three clinic listings. Your Google Business Profile decides whether your clinic is one of those three.

According to Google, 76% of people who search for a local business on their phone visit one within a day. For healthcare clinics, that means a patient searching for your service right now could be in your waiting room tomorrow. But only if they can find you.

This guide walks through every step of setting up and optimizing your Google Business Profile so your clinic shows up first.

Not showing up on Google Maps? We're the healthcare marketing experts - we'll fix that.

How Do You Claim and Verify Your Google Business Profile?

If you have not claimed your profile yet, go to business.google.com and search for your clinic name. If it already appears, click "Claim this business." If not, click "Add your business."

Google will ask you to verify that you own the clinic. The most common method is a postcard mailed to your clinic address with a code on it. This takes 5-7 days. Some clinics can verify by phone or email, which is faster.

Do not skip this step. An unclaimed profile can show wrong hours, old photos, or even directions to the wrong location. Once you claim it, you control what patients see.

What Information Should You Fill Out First?

After you claim your profile, fill out every field Google gives you. Clinics with complete profiles rank higher than those with missing information. Google says this directly in their help docs.

The fields that matter most

  • Business name: Use your real name. "Austin TMS Center" is fine. Do not add extra keywords like "Austin TMS Center Best Depression Treatment." Google can suspend profiles that do this.

  • Primary category: This is the most important choice. Pick the most specific option Google offers. If you run a TMS clinic, choose "TMS Provider" over "Mental Health Clinic." If you run a neurofeedback practice, choose "Neurofeedback Service" if available.

  • Secondary categories: You can add up to 9 more. Add every relevant category. A psychiatry practice might add "Psychiatrist," "Mental Health Service," and "TMS Provider" if they offer TMS too.

  • Address: Enter your exact address. Make sure it matches your website and every other directory listing. Even small differences like "Road" vs. "Rd." can hurt your rankings.

  • Phone number: Use a local number, not a toll-free one. Local numbers tell Google you are a real local business. Make sure it matches your website.

Also, fill out your website URL, appointment link, business hours, and the list of services you offer. Leave nothing blank.

How Do You Write a Google Business Profile Description That Ranks?

Your description can be up to 750 characters. Use all of it. Write in plain, clear language about what your clinic does, who you help, and where you are located.

What to include

Start with your main service and location. "[Clinic Name] provides TMS therapy and psychiatric care in Phoenix, AZ." Then mention your other services. End with what makes your clinic different, like your experience, your team, or the types of patients you help.

Use natural keywords, but do not stuff them. Write for patients, not for Google. A good description reads like something you would say if someone asked, "What does your clinic do?" For more on how healthcare SEO and your Google profile work together, see our local SEO guide.

How Often Should You Post on Your Google Business Profile?

Post at least once a week. Google treats your profile like a social media page. Active profiles rank higher than quiet ones.

What to post

  • Treatment tips: "3 things to know before your first TMS session" or "What to ask your doctor about neurofeedback."

  • Clinic updates: New hours, new staff, new equipment, or holiday schedules.

  • Blog links: When you publish a new blog post, share it as a Google post. This sends traffic to your website and signals to Google that your site is active.

  • Event posts: Open houses, free consultation days, or community health events.

Keep each post short. Two to three sentences plus one photo. Posts expire after 7 days in search results, so a weekly schedule keeps fresh content visible at all times.

Do Photos and Videos Affect Your Google Profile Rankings?

Yes. Google reports that clinics with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more clicks to their website than clinics without photos.

Upload at least 10 photos to start. Include your building exterior (so patients can find you), the waiting room, treatment rooms, and your team. Avoid stock photos. Patients can tell the difference, and Google prefers real images.

Video works too. A 30-second clip of your clinic or a short welcome from your doctor can set your profile apart from every other listing in your area. Most clinics do not use video on their Google profile, which means you stand out just by adding one.

How Do Reviews Affect Your Google Maps Ranking?

Reviews are one of the top three factors Google uses to rank local results. More reviews, higher ratings, and recent activity all push your clinic higher in the Maps section. For surgeons and specialist clinics, reviews often make the difference between position 1 and position 4.

Aim for 3-5 new reviews per month. Ask patients at the end of a good visit. Send a follow-up text with a direct link to your Google review page. Respond to every review within 48 hours. Google tracks response rates and rewards clinics that engage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have more than one Google Business Profile for my clinic?

Only if you have more than one physical location. Each real address can have its own profile. Do not create multiple profiles for the same location. Google will suspend them.

How long does it take for a new profile to rank in the Local Pack?

New profiles can appear in Maps results within 2-4 weeks of verification. Ranking in the top 3 usually takes 2-4 months with steady reviews, weekly posts, and accurate information.

What should I do if my profile shows wrong information?

Log into your Google Business Profile and update it. Changes usually go live within 24-48 hours. If someone else suggested an edit, Google may ask you to verify the change.
